Skywatch Friday | A geo Marvel @ Dhankar, Spiti Valley

Written by Poorna & Brinda

Dhankar, Spiti valley has one of the oldest monasteries in the country. The monastery has been identified as one of the unique structures as it is built on mud stilts. There are efforts going on to preserve the monastery.

When we were driving in Spectacular Spiti Valley last year, we took a detour to Dhankar after Tabo. Driving trough winding roads, we were approaching Dhankar. We could see the monastery at distance. As we were driving, we noticed this spectacular sight.

Dhankar, Spiti valley

These are mud spikes. Raising straight form the ground into the sky! We are not sure how old are these. It must be thousands of years before such structures happen. It is a geological marvel but we are not sure how long it will remain.

We are Brinda and Poorna from Bengaluru, the “Silicon city” or “Garden city” of India.

We travel together. We caught the travel bug 20 years back. On our honey moon, we traveled over the sea, in the train, by bus and in an aircraft! Our adventures probably started in that year. It continues, ever since.
