15 Spectacular River Road Trips in India you should do once!

Last updated on August 14th, 2023 at 06:13 pm

River road – A Road that runs parallel to a river.

One of the charms of road trips is the freedom it provides to  a traveller. We recently did the road trip on the world’s most treacherous river road in Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh. Tough yes. But it was a fantabulous trip!

Over the weekend, we were discussing about our river road trips. When we started counting, we realised that we have done some of the fantastic river road trips. The recent road trip in Spiti was on four river roads along Sutlej, Spiti, Chenab and Beas!

That was when we decided to start listing the river road trips that can be done in India. We were quite surprised to see that we had done almost 60 percent in this list. Poorna has done the ones along Brahmaputra and Lohit when he was serving in the Army in Arunachal Pradesh.

Driving along rivers is a mind-blowing experience. As you can see, all these river road trips are in the Himalayan region where the roads run parallel to the river. Each experience is different. We drove along ferocious Chenab river between Batal and Gramphu last fortnight. When we drove along Spiti, we had to really look down into the deep gorge it had created to see the river. Fast flowing Alakananda gave us company last year when we went to Badrinath while gentle Shyok was with us in Nubra valley. While Indus,Spiti and Zanskar flow through the barren and spectacular landscape of Himalayas,  Sutlej, Chenab,Parvati and Beas flow through cedar landscape of Kinnaur valley. Each road trip throws up some of the fascinating scenery that will make you to yearn for more! Just for benchmarking we have kept 50 KMs as minimum distance except for Zanskar. Some are long drives and some short. But each one is a beauty in itself.

Let us now take you through the list. Our thanks to Highway Legend H V Kumar who was enthusiastic to our idea and help vet this list.

Travel Tips

  1. Always check the condition of the river road locally. Become a part of a driving community like H V Kumar forum on FB where like minded members update on the road conditions.
  2. While driving in Himalayas, the thumb rule is “Leave early and reach early”. Always leave at sunrise. Weather in mountains change very fast. Leaving early will also help in crossing streams.
  3. Most of these roads are along deep valley on narrow roads. One need to drive very cautiously.
  4. Always keep an additional day while planning to drive during rains. Landslides may block the roads without notice.
  5. One can average not more than 25 KMs per hour on many of these roads. Plan accordingly.
  6. Driving on a river road gives lot of opportunity to stop, look and click. Enjoy the landscape.
  7. Ensure that your car is in a good condition.
