Leela, Kovalam is a lovely resort.
Sundowner experiences are always special. We have had some memorable moments during our journeys. In Udaipur, on the famed Sunset Terrace of Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel, we watched the sun going behind Aravali hills with lake in the foreground. Watching sunset in the Sea Spray restaurant facing Indian Ocean in that grand old hotel of Indian ocean – Galle Face Hotel – in Colombo was special. Of course, the sundowner experiences in the shacks of Goa are unforgettable.
One of the most fascinating hotels in the country is in Kovalam, Kerala. Perched on a cliff overseeing the large expanse of Arabian sea, Leela, Kovalam. as it is now known, is designed by the India’s famous architect, Charles Correa. The imprint of Mr Correa in the conceptual design of the hotel is still intact even though the hotel itself has changed hands in the last few years.
The best part of the hotel is its infinity pool and the sunset deck.
When we were travelling in Kerala during Christmas, we knew what we wanted to do in Kovalam. Though we did not stay in the hotel, we made sure we spent an evening at the deck watching the sun go down in the horizon. The deck is a cosy place to sit and sip your bubbly even as the sun bids good-bye.
The weather was perfect. Clear blue sky welcomed us when we arrived at the deck. Being winter, the sun wasn’t harsh. We always keep our fingers crossed whenever we look for “an ultimate sunset experience” hoping the clouds not to block out the sun in the last few seconds. We have been fortunate to see the sun going down till the end on few occasions. We were expecting that we would be rewarded with another moment to remember.

Kovalam is a lovely beach destination in the southern state of Kerala in India. It is at a distance of 20 KMs from the capital city of Trivandrum which is well-connected by air, train and bus to other parts of India.
