The Itinerary
7.00 AM – Leave home and hit Bangalore – Mysore highway. If you are closer to NICE road then take the NICE road and exit at Mysore road exit.
8.30 AM – Breakfast time. There are many choices on this road. You can either have “Thatte idlis” (Soft flat idlis) at “Renukamba” in Bidadi. The other good options are Malgudi Vatika near Wonderla gate or good old Kamat Loka Ruchi.
9.15 AM – After breakfast drive to Doddabyadarahalli.
10.45 AM – Arrive at Doddabyadarahalli which is 18 KMs from Mandya which is at the foothills of Brahmalingeshwara betta. The hill has steps to climb. There is a small temple for Brahmalingeshwara on top of the hill. The view of surrounding landscape from the top is beautiful. Pandavapura and surrounding areas are known for lush green paddy and sugarcane fields.
11.45 AM – Drive back towards Bangalore. On the way you may stopover at Budanur to visit two small Hoysala temples dedicated to Lord Ananthha Padmanabha and Lord Shiva.
1 PM – Depart Budanur.
1.30 PM – Lunch break. There are many options between Mandya and Channapatna. You can choose from Adigas, Maddur Tiffanys, Empire, Shivalli Tiffin Room, Kadambam, McDonalds, Cafe Coffee Day, A2B etc
2.30 PM – Depart for Channapatna
3 PM – You will be greeted by the welcome arch welcoming you to the “Town of toys”. Yes. Chnnapatna is known for wooden and lacquered toys. These are colourful and are excellent decorative pieces. Drive to Muniyappanadoddi which is 4 KMs from town to visit houses where the toys are manufactured. Walk into any house cum production centre who welcomes you and explain how the lovely toys are made.
4 PM – Depart the village and drive to Channapatna craft centre in town where you can see artisans selling their ware. You can pick up anything that interest you.
4.45 PM – Depart Channapatna for Bangalore. Stopover for snacks at either Kamat Loka Ruchi or Malgudi Vatika.
Travel Tips
- It is good to climb the hill early in the morning. Departing home around 6.30 AM should bring you to foothill around 9.30 AM.
- Since this trip involves climbing the hills, it may be tough for old people. They can stay put in the car if they wish to.
- Make sure you wear a nice hat and carry enough water.
- The road condition throughout the route is good.
- Carry a binocular to enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding landscape from the hill.We will continue to add more to this series. Till then plan an outing to Channapatna on one of the weekends!
